Nurse Mares
(immediate grafting, foal ready)
Selection
We provide hand picked nurse mares that are proven mothers to multiple foals of their own. These mares also have great qualities that make them even greater for the job. Our mares are easy to handle, have all the basic skills, i.e. tying, loading, farrier and the most important, they allow you to work with your foal safely.
Care
Our mares are our number one priority when leased and when they are home with their herd mates. All our mares get annual dental care, appropriate vaccinations and farrier care every 8-10 weeks, plus anything extra they need.
We expect that care to continue when serving as a nurse mare to your orphan foal. The better the mare is cared for the better she can provide for your foal.

Lactation
Our mares are brought into lactation through a 10-day protocol with hormone injections. Once they start producing milk, we begin hand milking two to three times a day to increase milk production.
Grafting
We graft the vast majority of the mares to the orphan foal at the client's location or vet clinic. We take great pride in having a 99% successful grafting rate, which is the direct result of our strict selection process. Lonestar Nurse Mares step in and make the best of a stressful situation.
Timeliness
When you need a nurse mare, every minute counts. We take that very seriously. When a nurse mare is requested, regardless of time of day, we are loaded and on the road within an hour of the request.
Support
We also provide after care and support to all clients. We are only a phone call away.
