Frequently asked questions
SOCIALIZATION! Nurse mares not only provide the nutrition critical for a foal's growth and health, but they also teach foals to become well-adjusted horses. Bucket or bottle raised foals often lack behavioral boundaries as they get older, as the majority of their interaction is with humans rather than other horses.
We know time is of the essence when it comes to newborns. When we receive the initial request for a nurse mare, its our goal to leave our ranch with the nurse mare within the hour. Depending on the location of the foal, it’s just drive time from there. The grafting process begins immediately upon arrival.
Our mares do not have foals. We induce milk production with hormone therapy.
Yes, 98% of the time our nurse mares travel to the foal and stay with them until they are weaned. We do offer an in-house service if the client feels more comfortable having the mare and foal at our location.
Most of our mares have been purchased from homes that are no longer breeding. Some of our mares can’t carry foals anymore but still enjoy raising babies, so this is a second chance for them to do what they love. All have been particularly screened and selected for temperament and character.
